Presentation 3 Script & Storyboard

FADE IN:

Wide landscape of the sun rising in Kuala Lumpur City.

Fade to urban city environments, people walking and the many cultures of KL (soft daylight, morning)

V/O: A city is a very special thing; providing a completely different experience for each and every person, according to the people you spend it with, the places you go to and the cultures you experience along the way.

(Soft, upbeat music playing in background.)

Montage of footage from popular places of KL, combined with places that wouldn’t ordinarily be shown (old coffee shop etc.)

That’s what “Cityscape” aims to illustrate: three very different sides of Kuala Lumpur, that give you, the viewer, the chance to experience people and places that you wouldn’t ordinarily visit.

Montage of the footage taken from their day (interview/travelling/eating/working).

Follow us as we follow these three individuals, hand-selected from drastically different backgrounds and sides of society. But yet they all have one thing in common.

Overhead, downward pan of the 3 people smiling, with iconic landmark behind. Then fade to black.

They still call Kuala Lumpur their home.

GFX: Cityscape: Kuala Lumpur

(Upbeat Malaysian-made music plays in background)

Cut to Jojo Struys in the Interview Chair.

(Jojo checks her watch)

Jojo: It is exactly…

8:06 in the morning of another beautiful Friday in Malaysia and I, unfortunately, have a television station to get to. But before we go, I thought I’d show you a little around my humble abode.

Cut to Jojo Struys walking around her living room. Dogs appear and Jojo picks them up, introducing them.

Jojo continues on throughout the house.

Fade to black.

Jojo: So, that was my house. Now, we have a pretty busy day ahead of us; I’ve got my regular television show to host, as well an event to emcee for in the evening. So I better get a move on. See you in a little while!

Cut to Dr. Hunt sitting in a chair at his apartment.

Dr. Hunt’s wife enters (Female Australian Senior Citizen), sits next to him, smiling wide at the camera.

Barbara looks behind the camera.

Dr Hunt: People ask me all the time why I came to Malaysia, and even though it’s a very long story, I always answer them with two words: my wife.

Say hello, Barbara.

Barbara Hunt: Morning.

Now are you sure you boys have had something to eat?

Multiple O/S: Yes. Yep, we’re sure.

Dr. Hunt: Now, I thought a nice way of starting off would be taking you through our little apartment, if you don’t mind.

Cut to Dr. Hunt and wife walking through their apartment, showing certain vintage objects and giving a short background on them.

(Both Dr. Hunt and wife give interesting details about the many peculiar and fascinating things they’ve bought or picked up while in Malaysia)

Cut to Dr. Hunt and wife at the front door of their apartment.

They walk out the apartment and close the door on camera crew.

Dr Hunt: And now we’re off for our morning walk. Always very important to stay healthy at our age.

Barbara: You can stay here if you like, but it might be a bit boring.

Cut to Deviyah sitting in her home.

Deviyah: Yeah, so I’ll show you round the house a bit, since I suppose you want to know who I am exactly. (laughs)

Cut to Deviyah showing camera crew around her home.

(Deviyah talks about her guitar, her animals and her parents)

Slow fade from black into the television set where Jojo is hosting

O/S: Lights! Camera’s rolling!

Series of footage of Jojo at work in front of the camera.

Cut to Jojo behind the scenes with a Chinese man.

After interviewing, Jojo proceeds back onto the set.

Jojo: Here we are on the set of Chalk & Cheese, with Director George Lim, who’s an incredibly visionary man who (explains his role).

George Lim: Jojo here is too kind. (smiles widely)

She’s an excellent host and we love working with her.

(Jojo proceeds to quickly interview George on what it’s like to work in the TV industry in Malaysia, the differences between here and other countries etc.)

Jojo: I guess break’s over and we’re back to work!

Cut to quick montage of Jojo working. Show her very busy. Then fade to black.

(Upbeat, metropolitan music playing)

Cut to Wide shot of Park where Dr. Hunt and Barbara are walking. Include inserts of passerby’s and local fauna.

(Nature sounds eg. Birds and crickets)

Cut to mid-shot of Dr. Hunt and Barbara walking together along the path.

Dr. Hunt: We’ve been coming to this park for years, and we love coming here because it’s so peaceful in the mornings. (He explains any interesting information about the park here)

Fade to more inserts and once again back to Dr. Hunt and Barbara.

The elderly couple continues walking while the camera stops.

Dr. Hunt: As per our usual routine, we’re going to go for lunch with some friends from America.

Barbara: This lovely couple who have so many stories about travelling; I’m sure you boys would enjoy them too.

Dr. Hunt: And about Malaysia, dear. That’s why these boys are here in the first place.

Cut to a wide shot of the international school where Deviyah attends.

(School noises eg. Bell ringing, kids playing)

Cut to an opening, interior shot of the canteen in which Deviyah and her friends are having lunch.

Quick cut to static, as if viewer had changed the channel. Then fade to black.

Deviyah: Hey, again. I just finished mathematics class before, and we’re on lunch break now.

(Deviyah introduces her friends to the camera and Deviyah interviews them about living in Malaysia, what they do for fun and where they go to hang out, for the sake of the camera)

Deviyah (sarcastically): Well that’s about it for News Media Prima, this has been News Journalist Deviyah, signing out. (laughs)

Cut to interior car of Jojo, as she drives on the road.

Include inserts of the highway and the things passengers may see along the way.

Jojo: Well, that was fun. Tiring, but fun. Hosting is always a blast but after a while it takes a toll. Next, I’m off to an event; a music festival where I’ll be hosting the awards ceremony.

People think this is constantly a very glamorous job, but few ever realize how it isn’t always like that. Not that I’m complaining; I love what I do. But I’m happy that you men are willing to document the behind the scenes action of what really goes on. And to be the honest, most of the time it’s nothing quite so amazing. (laughs)

Cut to car pulling up into Carpark, Jojo gets out of the car.

Jojo: Well here we are! Time to get into wardrobe and start the show!

Montage of behind the scenes footage of Jojo getting ready for emceeing the event.

Fade to black.

(Upbeat music plays in background)

Cut to closer shot of the table with four elderly people.

Fade to black.

(Dr. Hunt and Barbara introduce their friends to the camera, and ask a few questions to start the ball rolling, eg. Why they chose Kuala Lumpur, Whether they had travelled around Malaysia much etc.)

(They share funny stories regarding Kuala Lumpur)

Cut to Deviyah at vocal practice after school. Teacher on piano guides her through a warm-up, and then a full-fledged song.

(Deviyah singing for the camera)

Deviyah V/O: I’ve always loved singing; and performing is second nature to me after doing it for so long. Not that it gets any less scary when I look out onto the crowd, but when I start singing all that goes away and it’s just me and my song against the world.

Cut to after her practice, but still with her vocal teacher.

Fade to black.

(Vocal teacher starts talking about Deviyah, about how talented she is, how far she will go, how there are also many others like her looking for fame within Malaysia, though, so she has to keep working hard to reach that goal of fame)

Cut to footage taken during the music awards ceremony.

Jojo: And the winner is…

Cut to after the ceremony, with Jojo in one of the rooms behind the stage.

Jojo: Another successful event! (laughs)

I really love doing awards ceremonies because of the amount of sheer joy that the winners feel when I announce their names. There’s just so much energy in the room you can almost feel it!

Cut to Jojo walking away from the event location towards her car.

Jojo: And now we’re going to meet the others in front of the iconic KLCC towers-

Cut to Dr. Hunt outside the coffee shop

Dr. Hunt: for the first time. I’ve actually no clue what they look like. Hopefully I’m easy enough to spot.

Cut to Deviyah in a taxi on the way to KLCC.

Deviyah: I feel a bit lost around this area sometimes. I always found that ironic. I’ve spent my whole life here but I almost never go to see the most iconic building in Malaysia. (scoffs)

Cut to wide shot of the towers, with a clear focus also on the gardens in front of the mall.

(Upbeat music playing in background)

Cut to the three hosts walking to the gardens from different locations.

(Upbeat music continues and tapers off)

All three walk into frame and sit down at a park bench, with a pleasant green background behind. They greet each other for the first time.

(All three hosts exchanging pleasantries)

O/S (once they are facing camera): So what exactly is Kuala Lumpur to you?

Wide shot of the three hosts seated.

They look at each other a little while contemplating the question.

Dr. Hunt: Hmmm…

One-Quarter shots (Mid-body and above) of each speaker.

Jojo: Well, to me it’s a city that combines the best of both worlds; the old culture still remains while there are a lot of new, international movements going on too.

Deviyah: Yeah, I would have to agree. But I’d also say that Kuala Lumpur is a melting pot of many cultures, not just the new and the old.

Dr. Hunt: To me, Kuala Lumpur represents the ultimate getaway. The home away from home.

Wide shot of the three hosts seated.

O/S: What’s the best thing about living in Kuala Lumpur?

Medium shot of the three hosts seated.

Jojo: The amount of opportunity there is here for entertainers and performers- those who love being in the thick of the action, as long as you’re willing to work for it.

Dr. Hunt: The peaceful nature of the environment and the people as well. They’re very welcoming and very passionate about their culture.

Deviyah: Definitely the people. There’s such a diverse group of people here who are fun to hang out with.

Wide shot of the three hosts seated.

O/S: And lastly, what’s the best reason you can think of to come visit Kuala Lumpur?

Medium shots of individual hosts when speaking.

Fade to black.

Jojo: To meet new people of all sorts.

Dr. Hunt: To experience a distinctly fresh side of Asia that you cannot find anywhere else.

Deviyah: For the food!

Jojo: Oh, yes of course! We are extremely well known for our food.

Deviyah: All kinds of tasty dishes like nasi lemak, banana leaf and durians. (laughs)

Cut to a long shot of the three of them seated.

Jojo: Thanks for spending the day with us.

Dr. Hunt: We hope you enjoyed your time, and hopefully learnt something new about life in Malaysia.

Deviyah: Or even experienced a new side to the Malaysia you already know so well.

Everyone: Until next time!

Cut to even wider shot of the three sitting down.

They stand up and wave towards the camera, before turning to each other and talking (no audio).

Fade to black.

(Credits music fades in)
